We are a historic, picturesque Victorian downtown with eclectic businesses that serve the entire community - the county seat, with local colleges and schools providing cultural and enrichment opportunities that attract people from all walks of life.

Canton is built on the foundation of scrappy and gutsy settlers from Vermont, who found the Grasse River and developed a network of mills that the town grew up around. One of Canton’s most valuable resources is its agricultural and land opportunities.

We also host TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York) and a plethora of other historic arts; including the hometown of famed American West artist Frederic Remington, world-renowned canoe craftsman J.Henry Rushton, and respected statesman Silas Wright.

About Canton

Canton is a small college community with a rich social and cultural life, a beautiful historic district, affordable living, the seat of county government, and plentiful recreational and natural resources. Our vision is a Canton that preserves these distinctive qualities while achieving a more robust economy with more jobs, more residents, and more visitors.

We value our community, we take care of each other, and we support local agriculture and locally sourced food.
